2020 Westerman Foundation Grant Funding Update

In April, The  Westerman Foundation submitted a nonprofit needs survey to both funded agencies and unfunded nonprofit organizations in order to collect data on areas of greatest need related to COVID-19. The Foundation Board and staff have analyzed the nonprofit survey responses, and have utilized this information to assist with the development of new funding strategies to address and help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the lives of families and communities across our nation.

The Westerman Foundation board met recently to discuss the survey results, the changing nonprofit landscape, and to evaluate its 2020 funding priorities. The Board decided to implement a 2020 Funding Plan that enables the Foundation to be nimble and responsive to the changing needs of nonprofit organizations and the families and communities that they serve.

As a result, The Westerman Foundation Board has implemented the following changes to the 2020 Grant Funding Cycle:

  • The Board has approved a policy to remove funding restrictions on all 2019 Westerman Foundation grant awards. This 2020 policy change will enable funded agencies to identify how best to utilize their funds during this season.

  • The Board has chosen to modify the 2020 Foundation grant award process.  Subsequently, there will not be a  2020 grant application process.

  • During the 2020 funding cycle, the Board will implement Donor Advised Funding and will designate funding to specific focus areas and organizations. This strategy will help expedite the distribution of funds to organizations capable of mobilizing resources in an efficient and effective manner to communities most in need.

  • The Board and staff will monitor the state of affairs within our country and nonprofit organizations throughout the year and will adjust the 2020 funding plans and priorities as needed.


The Westerman Foundation values our partnership with our funded agencies and appreciates the great work of all nonprofit organizations. We recognize that these are unusual times that require adaptations for all of us in order to address the critical issues facing our nation.  Nevertheless, we are committed to fulfill our mission by joining forces with nonprofit organizations to continue our work to provide educational opportunities, promote the resiliency of children and families, and to help strengthen communities across the United States.
